I had assumed that, like my siblings, I wasn t going to go to college. Even with the college scholarship that I received, there was no guarantee that my family could afford the room and board. Consequently, my mother only agreed to one year of college at a time.

The British physicist, famous for his discovei y of the electron, was born in Cheetham, near Manchester, on December 18, 1856. He first entered Owens College (later Manchester University) at the early age of fourteen. In 1876 Thomson won a scholarship in Mathematics to Trinity College, Cambridge, and remained a member of the College for the rest of his life. He became a Fellow in 1880, Lecturer in 1883 and Master in 1918, a position he held with great flair until his death on August 30, 1940. 

Bernard Ephraim Julius Pagel was bom in Berlin on 4 January 1930, but when his father was dismissed from his post as Jewish persecution increased, the family moved to Britain in 1933. From Merchant Taylors School he won an open scholarship in Natural Sciences at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, graduating with First-class honours in Physics in 1950. His early research at Cambridge (Ph.D. 1955) centred on the solar atmosphere. Inspired by Willy Fowler, a future Nobel Prize winner who was visiting from California, he started a life-long interest in the abundances of the chemical elements. 

Lowry eventually followed similar thinking about ions and charges in organic molecules. The son of a Methodist minister, Lowry entered the Central Technical College in 1893 on a Clothworkers Scholarship, and he carried out... 

It sounded terrific. I had spent eight years scratching out the cost of my education with the help of scholarships, college loans, and part-time work as a sperm-donor, file clerk, common laborer, camp counselor, typist and night technician at a downtown blood bank. I worked straight through summers and almost every vacation break. 

Thirty years from now, when I m 48,1 will retire and survey my empire. I will have created and led a hugely successful Fortune 500 company I will have used my considerable wealth to set up a literacy foundation and a home for orphans in my native Cuba. Deeply satisfied with my accomplishments, I will then establish scholarships for disadvantaged students to Briarwood College, for I will recall with great gratitude that my education there made all of my accomplishments possible. 

In 1973, Julian was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. On April 19, 1975, he died of cancer at the age of 76. Julian received numerous posthumous honors. Science buildings were named after him at DePauw MacMurray College, Jacksonville, Illinois Illinois State University, Normal, Illinois and Coppin State College, Baltimore. At least four public schools have been named after him. An annual lecture series in his honor is held at DePauw, and a scholarship established by the family supports many DePauw students. A painting of him hangs in the clinical center of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. In 1990 he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame (Borman, 1993). 

In the years following the funeral, Manchester citizens continued to pay tribute to their great natural philosopher. In 1853 a granite monument was erected over Dalton s grave. Scholarships were established in his name at Manchester s new Owens College, and in 1903 the city celebrated his discovery of the atomic theory. It was a fitting tribute to the man who had transformed chemistry. 

I am very fortunate to teach at Boston College for several reasons. First, the Sociology Department provides a sense of community that nourishes scholarship. Second, the university has consistently supported my work through grants to cover the cost of tape transcription.

Francle was a high school valedictorian. Full ride to the state college. Her first week in college, she tried X. It was eye-opening. She loved It. A year later, her scholarship was revoked when she was arrested for possession. Her parents begged her to stop, but she insisted that she did not have a problem. She didn t even drink alcohol. She could stop anytime. But she didn t. Now all those years of hard work were gone. She was a felon and it hurt.

Students who are convicted of using or possessing amyl nitrite can be denied federal scholarships and loan guarantees, which may affect their ability to get a college education. In 2001, about 14,000 high school graduates were denied federal aid, at least temporarily, because of prior drug convictions.
