Tetracyclines Colestipol

Drugs that may affect tetracyclines include antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium iron salts zinc salts barbiturates bismuth salts carbamazepine cholestyramine colestipol phenytoin rifamycins urinary alkalinizers (eg, sodium lactate, potassium citrate).

Colestipol causes constipation and a bloating sensation. The absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and certain drugs such as digitalis, thiazides, tetracycline, and phenylbutazone may be altered. Therefore, medications are given either 1 hour before or 2 hours after colestipol. 

G1 distress, nausea, and vomiting can be minimized by administration of tetracyclines with food. Cholestyramine and colestipol can bind orally administered tetracychnes and interfere with their absorption. Generally, tetracyclines should be administered 2 hours before or 2 hours after meals and other drugs that interfere with their absorption. 

Tetracyclines can interact with other medications. Avoid giving tetracyclines two hours before or after the patient receives colestipol (Colestid) or cholestyramine ((Questran) because these medications decrease the absorption of tetracycline. 

Colestipol can reduce the absorption of tetracycline by about a half. Information about other tetracyclines is lacking but it seems likely that they will interact similarly. 

Colestipol 30 g taken either in 180 mL of water or orange juice reduced the absorption of a single 500-mg dose of oral tetracycline in 9 healthy subjects by 54 to 56%, as measured by reeovery in the urine. ...
