SOURCE - Extracted from Autumn Crocus flower (Colchicum autumnale). Also available from many chemical companies. [Pg.90]

The natural compound colchicine (1) was extracted from the poisonous meadow saffron Colchicum autumnale L. and was the first antimitotic destabilizing agent to be discovered [9], It consists of three rings a trimethoxyphenyl (TMP, ring A), a... [Pg.217]

Compared with extracts, pure compounds undoubtedly guarantee a more precise and reproducible dosage and are the only acceptable form of administration of active principles characterised by an extremely narrow therapeutic window, such as the plant alkaloid colchicine 40 from Colchicum autumnale L. Lethal poisoning from colchicine has been reported upon ingestion of 3-4 times the therapeutic dose of this compound111 and it would, therefore, be impractical to use colchicine-rich extracts rather than their active principle. [Pg.164]

Derivation From Colchicum autumnale by extraction and subsequent crystallization. Has been synthesized. [Pg.320]

LOIC C Colchicum and demecolchicine Colchicine is an alkaloid, previously extracted from the seeds of the Autumn Crocus or Meadow-saffron, Colchicum autumnale L., but nowadays from the seeds of Gloriosa,... [Pg.94]

Major alkaloid extracted from seeds of Colchicum autumnale common meadow saffron. Nausea, vomiting, convulsions, paralysis, death. Used as a treatment for gout and in experimental biology as an arrestor of mitosis to facilitate examination of chromosomes. [Pg.675]

Results obtained in the National Cancer Institute of the USA from the study of the cytostatic activity of the (133) and bis(chloroethyl)amino derivatives on 60 tumor lines were reported [138]. Originally colchicine a soluble alkaloid was extracted from Colchicum autumnale also known as autumn crocus, meadow saffron or itkuchala in Uzbekistan which means dog poison [138]. [Pg.1000]

Alkaloid from Colchicum autumnale, C. kesselringii, C. luteum, Merendera robusta and M. Jolantae (Liliaceae). Used as 0.02M CHCI3 soln. as an extractive indicator in the EDTA titration of Cu(/7) (pH 4.5). Needles (EtOAc). Sol. CHCI3. Mp 175-177°. [oef -256° (c,... [Pg.254]

It is a relatively recent observation that Colchicum species contain numerous chemical constituents of diverse chemical properties. Recognition of this fact has led to more efficient methods of isolation. In addition to neutral, phenolic, and basic alkaloids, 0. autumnale contains fatlike substances which are removed by a preliminary ligroin extraction of the pulverized, dry material. From such an extraction of the flowers of C. autumnale, Santavy and Herout (293) have isolated a paraffin, Ca7-28H5g 58, m.p. 58-60° an alcohol, CaaH450H, m.p. 66-67° and a phytosterol, m.p. 139-140°. Benzoic, salicylic, and 2-hydroxy-6-methoxybenzoic acids may be separated from the alkaloid mixture by virtue of their solubility in ether and aqueous base (294). The alkaloids themselves may be separated into neutral, phenolic, or basic fractions by standard extraction techniques. Pure alkaloids may be obtained from each fraction by fractional crystallization and chromatography on... [Pg.250]
