Cobalt pigments

Cobalt pigments are usually produced by mixing salts or oxides and calcining at temperatures of 1100—1300°C. The calcined product is then milled to a fine powder. The compound occurs in nature as the mineral cobalt spar or sphaero-cobaltite. It is used in ceramics in cobalt pigments as a catalyst as a temperature indicator and in the preparation of other cobalt(II) salts. It also is added to soil to provide nutritional supplement in forage for cattle. 

The cobalt carbonate basic salt is the commercially-used cobalt carbonate. It is used primarily for manufacturing cobalt pigments. It also is used to prepare cobalt(II) oxide and other cobalt salts. 

Cobalt nitrate is used in the decoration of porcelain and stones in the manufacture of invisible inks and cobalt pigments in hair dyes in animal feeds as an additive to sods in catalysts preparation and in vitamin supplements. 

The usefulness of this kind of analysis is illustrated in Fig. 2.11 where the square wave voltammograms for azurite, smalt, and two samples from the frescoes painted by Palomino (1707) in the Sant Joan del Mercat church in Valencia (Spain) are shown. Copper pigments yield a unique stripping peak at —0.05 V, whereas cobalt pigments produce a main anodic peak at +0.02 V, accompanied by overlapping... 

SEM/EDX analysis indicated that copper, frequently accompanied by cobalt pigments, was present in the samples from such frescoes. Analysis of voltammetric curves indicated that azurite or malachite, eventually accompanied by smalt, were the original pigments, and were accompanied (as previously described) by tenorite... 

In the 19th century, ultramarine, Guignet s green, cobalt pigments, iron oxide pigments, and cadmium pigments were developed in quick succession. 

The green as well as the blue transparent cobalt pigments are used as filter materials for cathode ray tubes (CRT) [5.279].

Many cobalt pigments are used in oil paintings cobalt blue - a siHcate, Thenard s blue - an aluminate, cobalt violet - a phosphate. 

The Mn-doped YInOs perovskite develops an intense blue hue that is comparable to industrial cobalt pigments, although it is free of yellow overtint [19]. The best color corresponds to the YIno,9Mno,i03 composition, which was proposed for high-performance applications, due to the very high cost of precursors (particularly indium oxide). 

There is a single cobalt carbonate, cobalt(II) carbonate (C0CO3) used as a pigment and listed by the Colour Index (1971). Cobalt carbonate is used as a raw material for the manufacture of other cobalt pigments, such as Turkish green (. v.).
