Coatings functions

The effects of size surface area, shape, purity method of synthesis, charge, surface coating, functionalized groups, and aggregation need to be carefully considered when assessing potential risks of CNT toxicity. Toxicology studies on CNTs should be accompanied by improved control in manufacturing and improved analysis before CNTs can be successfully used for pharmaceutical applications. 

Plasma polymers of certain kinds of monomers have very little, if any, internal stress, and thickness is not a limiting factor of application. However, because of this very feature such polymers may not provide certain coating functions that are sought for the application of plasma polymerization. In other words, the internal stress is not a drawback of plasma polymer but an important characteristic of the materials formed by LCVD.

The stress state of a coating is closely interconnected with the adhesion of that elastomer to the concrete. If adhesion forces are not zero, peeling stresses arise in the coating, which is in a plain stress state. Such stresses can reach a critical value and concentrate in a zone of a concrete substrate where the cracks are formed. In the absence of adhesion, the coating functions independently of the substrate, and any increase in the exterior load will result in the development of a peeling area. A general list of coat function and release mechanisms commonly employed is provided in Table 7.8. In addition to coat material concerns noted in the previous section on coating ingredients, there are other practical considerations that should be taken into account when formulating. 

Penguins must withstand extreme cold for up to 120 days without food and then be able to dive up to 50 m into freezing waters in order to feed. In dry conditions, then-coats function as an excellent wind barrier eliminating heat loss though convection. When the animal needs to dive for food, the coat transforms into a smooth and waterproof skin eliminating any trapped air. This switch in functionality is achieved by a muscle attached to the shaft of the feather. When the muscle is locked down, the coat becomes a water-tight barrier and when released the coat transforms itself into a thick air-filled windproof coat. 

Within the area of textiles, coatings and back-coatings are applied either to confer a level of flame retardancy alone or as an additional flame retardant property to another coating function such as water repellenqr, for example.
