Mat and continuous glass fibre reinforcements theoretically all the thermoplastics are usable in these forms, but up to now developments have concentrated on polypropylenes (PP), polyamides (PA) and thermoplastic polyesters (PET) fibre-reinforced PEEK, polyetherimide (PEI) and polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) are used for high-performance applications. They are presented in a range of forms from stampable sheets to pellets, prepregs, ribbons, impregnated or coated continuous fibre rods. More rarely (as in the case of PA 12, for example), the thermoplastic is provided in liquid form. [Pg.774]

In the thermoplastics area, precipitated calcium carbonate is principally used in PVC applications, a market with which it has been associated since the early days of the polymer. Despite some erosion by coated natural products, the combination of small particle size and fatty acid coating continues to give a unique blend of properties in both unplasticised and plasticised PVC formulations. Coating Fluidized beds of thermoplastic resins have been used to facilitate the coating of metallic parts. A properly prepared, heated metal part is dipped into the fluidized bea, which permits complete immersion in the dry solids. When the solubility of the thermoplastic is poor at room temperature it may be possible to produce a dispersion in a mixture of diluents and latent solvents. This dispersion may be applied by conventional paint spray equipment. The coated item is placed in an oven where the diluents evaporate off. The thermoplastics were investigated by CIGC well below their glass transitions so that surface thermodynamics were dominant. Column temperatures were varied over a 40C range in order to find enthalpies and entropies of interaction. When injected into the capillary columns coated with the thermoplastic polymers, the three probes listed above exhibited peaks which tailed continuously even at the lowest possible concentrations. For this reason, weaker acids and bases which eluted as symmetric peaks were used to study the polymer surfaces. Specifically, methylene chloride (CH Cl.) with an AN of 20.4 and its DN is equal to 0, and nitromethane TNO -CH ) having an AN equal to 20.5 and DN equal to 2.7 were chosen.
