Coarse or energy analysis

The aim of a Coarse analysis is to identify and evaluate the hazards of the different areas of a plant. The Energy model is its theoretical basis. Those hazards representing the potential of severe losses are focused upon. A Coarse analysis typically follows a stepwise procedure. 

4 Risk estimation, evaluation of needs of further actions 

This chapter gives a detailed description of each step of the Coarse analysis. We will apply the same basic steps in all the four risk-analysis methods presented here. We will not repeat the description of each basic step in such detail for the other risk-analysis methods.

The analysis object is a geographical area of the plant. It is recommended to subdivide the plant into areas, following the established departments.

We will here focus on four different methods Coarse or energy analysis. Job-safety analysis. Comparison analysis and CRIOP. They all involve analyses of the effects of human performance on the risk of accidents. Use of experience of earlier accidents and incidents through discussions in problem-solving groups is another common denominator. For the coarse estimation of extruder size and screw speed, simple mass and energy balances based on a fixed output rate can be used. For the more detailed design of a twin-screw extruder configuration it is necessary to combine implicit experience knowledge with simulation techniques. Theses simulation techniques cover a broad range from specialized programs based on very simple models up to detailed Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) driven by Finite Element Analysis (FEA) or Boundary Element Method (BEM).
