Clogging

Impingement demister systems are designed to intercept liquid particles before the gas outlet. They are usually constructed from wire mesh or metal plates and liquid droplets impinge on the internal surfaces of the mist mats or plate labyrinth as the gas weaves through the system. The intercepted droplets coalesce and move downward under gravity into the liquid phase. The plate type devices or vane packs are used where the inlet stream is dirty as they are much less vulnerable to clogging than the mist mat. [Pg.245]

Vacuum filtering can be a bit tricky, as the filter paper clogs up very quickly and stalls the process. With this stuff it is particularly important to get rid of as much of the solids as possible or your distillation be will very messy. A way round that I have found (that isn t in any book) was to use loads of filter papers, throw them all into a big beaker and then rinse them with solvent, then filter the solvent. Jet Aerators. Jet aerators are a cross between the diffused and mechanical aerators. Air and water are pumped separately under the water surface into a mixing chamber and ejected as a jet at the bottom of the tank or pond (Fig. 3f). Jet aerators are suited for deep tanks and have only moderate cost. Disadvantages include high operational costs, limitations caused by tank geometries, and nozzles that can clog. Filtered valves contain a fine internal filter, typically below the body orifice. This filter prevents clogging by the debris sometimes found in product and package. The use of filtration is recommended with any valve systems containing body, stem, or actuator orifices of 0.25-mm (or smaller) diameter unless exceptional care is taken in the cleaning of product and package components.
