A variety of biomarkers have been shown to be valuable individually for one or several toxicant or disease situations. Few of these biomarkers have been systematically evaluated for the plethora of situations that might provoke false positive responses. Acceleration of the current pace of biomarker evaluation and qualification demands (a) the availability of panels of biomarker-assays that can be comparatively evaluated on well-defined common sample sets, (b) fit-for-purpose performance evaluation in controlled animal studies with carefully benchmarked histological endpoints and samples from well-defined focused clinical trial cohorts, and (c) ready availability of banked blood and urine sample archives from clinical trial populations with carefully documented morbidities such as the Framingham Heart Study,45 or the Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network (DILIN) prospective study,46 to name a few. Availability of such panels of validated biomarker assays and well-documented preclinical and clinical samples, as well as increased cooperation between animal model researchers and clinical researchers will enable individual biomarkers to be qualified for sensitivity of specifically defined adverse events, qualified for appropriate specificity using samples of defined benign events, and collected into panels that yield complementary information about the health and safety of animals and patients. 

Having raised more than 14 million in 1999, for example, Radiant Research surprised the clinical trials industry in May 2000 when it announced that it was purchasing peer SMO Hill Top Research. The acquisition of Hill Top s pharmaceutical research division added 20 investigative sites to Radiant s network, bringing the grand total to 38 sites. At the completion of the acquisition, Radiant employed more than 500 investigators and study staff with expertise across 16 therapeutic areas. This acquisition made Radiant the largest owned-site SMO. 

Other SMOs joined a growing list of enterprises that finally exited the clinical trials industry. InSync Research shut down its operations in 2000 after selling four of its seven sites to Radiant Research. Clincare, which had hoped to expand its regional network of eight owned sites, also went out of business in 2000.

The UK Clinical Research Network (UKCRN) was developed in the UK to support clinical research and to facilitate the conduct of randomised prospective trials of interventions and other well-designed studies. It currently supports six topic-specific clinical research networks in the fields of cancer, dementias and neurodegenerative disease, diabetes, medicines for children, mental health and stroke (UK Clinical Research Network, 2006).
