Clinical information integration

Cincinnati Children s Hospital Medical Center, the 2003 recipient of the prestigious Healthcare Information Management and Systems Society s (HIMSS) Nicholas E. Davies Award of Excellence for Electronic Health Record (eHR), was able to reduce medication errors by 35% and decrease medication turnaround time by 52% through the use of an integrated clinical information system. 

Through collaboration with Clinomics Biosciences, Inc., we obtained access to their breast cancer patient database containing clinical information and immunohistochem-istry tissue array data. We developed an integrative profile for breast cancer survival and treatment response predictions, which composed the expression profile of several major activated protein kinases as well as several traditional clinical parameters (39).

The AHFS Framework enables developers to easily embed drug content into pharmacy and clinical information systems. It can be used to rapidly integrate two respected drug knowledge bases the American Hospital Formulary Service (AHFS) Drug Information monographs, and First DataBank s NDDF Plus. Combined, they allow healthcare professionals to have seamless access to comprehensive drug information, within their usual work-flow systems. 

Prior to the initiation of initial studies in man, it is important that all of the non-clinical information available is made into an integrated summary. This information must be included in the clinical investigators brochure and so that the clinical protocol can be modified to include relevant biochemical or other markers to minimize human risk. The regulatory authority and ethics committees are further target audiences, and the company may wish to use this for formal, internal proceedings to justify the decision to proceed with initial human exposure.
