Numerous theories exist as to how the Chilean deposits formed and survived. It has been postulated that the unique nitrate-rich caUche deposits of northern Chile owe their existence to an environment favorable to accumulation and preservation of the deposits, rather than to any unusual source of the saline materials (2). The essential conditions are an extremely arid climate similar to that of the Atacama desert in the 1990s, slow accumulation during the late Tertiary and Quaternary periods, and a paucity of nitrate-utilizing plants and soil microorganisms. 

Though an important part of the Quaternary climate puzzle, this view of the ice-age cycles is by itself quite incomplete. If Milankovitch forcings alone govern climate change then ...

In Chapter 3, hydrothermal and volcanic gas fluxes from submarine back-arc basins and island arc are estimated. These fluxes are compared with midoceanic ridge hydrothermal fluxes. The Indus alluvial plain of Punjab and Sindh provinces in Pakistan is of Quaternary age and is similar to the Ganges alluvial system of India and Bangladesh. The sediments of the plain have their provenance in the western Himalayas and are brought down by the River Indus and its tributaries. The alluvial deposits are widespread and thick (Smedley, 2005) and mostly form unconfined aquifers. However, in contrast to the Bengal basin, the aquifers are relatively oxic (Mahmood et al., 1998 Tasneem, 1999). The area also differs in having a more arid climate and greater proportion of Pleistocene deposits with greater apparent connectivity between the river systems and the aquifers (Smedley, 2005). 

Tibet we also obtained carbonates from older geomorphic surfaces, in order to develop some perspective on the isotopic effects of climate variability during the Quaternary.
