Clear liquid diet

Viral or bacterial-induced diarrhea is usually transient and requires only a clear liquid diet and increased fluid intake. Antimicrobial therapy may be indicated by the presence of blood in the stool or fecal leukocytes. Intravenous fluids may be required if dehydration occurs. 

Tell the client to stay on a clear liquid diet for the next 24 hours. 

Last but not least, Pickhardt et al. (2003) obtained tbe best results of polyp detection to date with virtual colonoscopy in a large cohort of 1233 asymptomatic patients. The day before CT colonography they combined a clear liquid diet with a double dose of oral sodium phosphate and two bisacodyl tablets. Faecal tagging was performed with 2x250 ml of a 2.1% w/v barium suspension and 60 ml of Gas-trografin. Excellent results of polyp detection were obtained. 

Diet clear liquids beginning at 6.00 a.m. the day prior to surgery clear liquids beginning at 5.00 p.m. 2 days prior to surgery... 

Diet clear liquids as tolerated, supplemented with parenteral fluids... 

Clear liquids allow the bowel to rest. A client with diarrhea should be consuming clear liquids only for 24 hours, then move on to eating a bland diet, and after that progress to eating more solid food if the diarrhea does not reoccur. 

This term covers a wide variety of dietary preparations that range from clear liquids which provide little in the way of nourishment to nearly complete diets in liquid form. For example, an infant formula is one type of liquid diet, whereas tube feedings are another. 

The amount of cholesterol in the diet does affect blood cholesterol levels. In a recent study by Mattson and colleagues (1), a liquid formula diet containing 4 different amounts of cholesterol was fed to over 60 male prisoners. The results clearly show that for each 100 mg cholesterol per 1000 calorie increment there is a linear and predictable rise in serum cholesterol. But, these plasma changes are small and do not tell us how much cholesterol is actually absorbed.
