Humans also learned that poisons could be obtained from plants. In classical Rome, for example, mushrooms were the poison of choice and were expertly used by Agrippina, wife of Emperor Claudius and mother of Nero. Agrippina had Lollia Paulina put to death because Claudius, in a careless moment, remarked on Lollia s beauty. [Pg.720]

Vermouth was initially made from red wine, produced to be slightly sweet, and possess a mildly sharp after taste. However, around 1800, dry vermouth made its appearance in the Marseilles, France. In 1813, Joseph Noilly created the style that came to be known as dry or French vermouth. By 1855, Noilly s son, Louis, and his brother-in-law, Claudius Prat, were producing Noilly Prat dry vermouth in southern France. This white, wine-based, fortified drink, is now flavored with as many as 40 aromatic herbs and flavorings, such as juniper, cloves, quinine, orange peel, nutmeg, and coriander (The New Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1995). [Pg.254]

Claudius does not promise anything about the perfection of the magisterium, but he will carry out his art with all his energy and ability may the Lord God decide about the perfection thereof. If his work may be unsuccessful, Claudius should not be considered an impostor and deceitful. Let the generosity of His Honor provide all else that is needful. [Pg.111]

In exchange for half of the alchemical medicines Syrrus was to produce, in other words, Rozmberk offered this alchemist full room and board, political protection, and even a sort of health insurance. Moreover, Claudius was sure to make it clear that his success was dependent on God s will alone he could not be held responsible for failure. [Pg.111]
