Civilizations backward

Environmentalists and ecologists, however, oppose constmction of any new incinerators and landfill facilities. They would like to close all existing incineration and landfill facilities, if possible. They are wrong. Unless human civilization is to go backward, there will always be hazardous and infectious wastes produced by industry. These wastes must go somewhere. A solution must be found. 

The differing rates of consumption of the two curves emphasize that combustion efficiency can play a major role in the life of this resource. Curve A shows a twofold increase in consumption by the year 2000, but the Paley report 3 years later shows a fourfold increase (8). Neither of these take into account the rapid spread of modern civilization into the backward nations. There we find 80% of the world s population. If they approach the western level of consumption, the energy requirements will leap tenfold above the estimate. Only the use of nuclear energy can hope to achieve this result. Even with that source it is not inconceivable that we will exhaust the economic corn-... 

If we were to have over the next three or four or five years recurring plagues of widespread different diseases of different sorts, if our crops were to be affected by bacterial agents, if we were to be continually in a state of suspense, not knowing what disease was going to descend upon us next, obviously our industrial progress and our very civilization would be shaken and we would slide backwards, while our opponents moved forward. 

Many occupations in this world, while profitable, make no contribution to human advancement. Employment in such occupations may be satisfactory to the unthinking, but whoever realizes that employment in the chemical industries is an opportunity to serve in a fundamental occupation, upon which all others rest, without which our country would become a backward nation, and out of which grows civilization itself, glows with justifiable pride in the fact that his life has purpose and that he is serving humanity well. He, individually, feels that he is making a contribution to the industrial and intellectual development of all people everywhere, and especially to our country, the greatest nation in the world. A comparative analysis of the interwar scientific and technological institutions related to the chemical industry also confirms the pessimistic diagnosis of contemporary observers. The two modest initiatives, the Institute Quimico de Sarria and the Institut de Quimica Aplicada, reveal the backwardness of Spanish institutions. One cannot make the private sector alone responsible for Spain s low level. It seems much more as if the merely adaptive attitude of the companies was a rational response to the absence of a scientific and technological policy. There was not in Spain any institute like the Milano Politecnico, and there were no outstanding personalities. Looking at this key aspect of industrial progress, it is hard to believe that, had the Civil War not taken place, and had Spain entered World War II, the Spanish chemical industry would have emulated that of Italy. The scientific and technical deficit of Spain remains one of the more puzzling questions of Spanish economic history. 

ABSTRACT The purpose of this article is to present the impact of implementing new solutions to increase the level of safety in air traffic. The author presents charts and statistics, which are a clear prerequisite to consideration of the need to implement innovative systems in the fastest growing modes of transport—aviation. In addition, illustrated the high demand of Polish economy to new technologies and its backwardness compared to other EU countries. For the preparation of this article the authors use available standards and statistics from Civil Aviation Authority.
