Civil death is a legal status entailing the loss of most or all civil rights, typically though not exclusively due to conviction of a felony offense. [Pg.282]

Mr Leane is a 61-year-old retired civil servant who lives alone in a rural setting following the death of his wife 2 years ago. In the American Civil War and the First World War estimates of mortality from penetrating wounds were more than 80%. Many deaths were as the result of infection, with gangrene being a particular problem. The penicillin mould was identified in 1928 but it was only in the early 1940s that optimal culture conditions and a purification procedure to produce pure penicillin were established. Large-scale production then commenced in the USA, where adequate facilities and financial investment were available. The objective was to produce as much penicillin as possible to treat injured troops with open wounds so that they could recover as quickly as possible during the invasion of France and subsequent liberation of Europe in 1944-45. [Pg.427]

That was worrisome news. The Ten might pay little heed to the death of a prostitute or two, but the slightest hint of civil insurrection will always trigger repression. Nevertheless, I just said, Thanks, and escorted Violetta over to the fallen hero. [Pg.26]

A little more than a decade later Goodyear died. Within a year of his death, the American Civil War broke out. The Union military used about 27 million worth of rubber products by 1865, helping launch the American rubber industry. [Pg.740]

Archaeological chemistry is just beginning to explore the life and death of ancient peoples and civilizations. This research opens a vast avenue to reach back into history and revisit the past. Further innovations, along with the ingenuity of researchers, will grant archaeologists an even better view of times long ago. [Pg.189]

Yet it is not impossible to gather enough clues to find out what happened long ago. Just as paleobiologists—scientists who study ancient life—have theorized about a comet or asteroid impact causing the dinosaur extinction, archaeological chemists have studied artifacts to learn something about the life and death of Otzi, as well as the rise and fall of Roman civilization. [Pg.190]

For gold the Spaniards eradicated the ancient civilization of the Peruvian Incas Pizarro disavowed any mission to convert the heathens to Christianity, saying coldly and simply 1 have come to take from them their gold. For love of gold, settlers in the nineteenth-century New World met dusty deaths in the American West. For trafficking, penalties are based on the schedule for the drug in question, the amount of drug, whether it is the person s first or second (or subsequent) offense, and (in some cases) whether another person s death or serious bodily injury is involved. The various permutations make determining the sentence for a given individual fairly complex. To this must be added the possibility of civil penalties and asset forfeiture. [Pg.42]

Similarly, in Krushwitz v McDonald s Restaurants of Oregon, the court refused to compensate the estate of an employee who fell asleep at the wheel and was killed in an automobile accident as he was returning home after working multiple shifts (51). Although a separate civil case held McDonald s liable for the injuries caused by Krushwitz, the Oregon Supreme Court upheld denial of Krushwitz s workers compensation claim. Because Krushwitz had completed his work and was returning home at time of his death, he was outside of the workers compensation realm. [Pg.382]

In addition to the Civil Rights Act, other laws and regulations affect the management ofhuman resources. For instance, the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 established the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to develop and enforce workplace standards designed to prevent work-related injuries, illnesses, and deaths (OSHA, 2007). Of particular relevance to pharmacy are OSHA s ergonomic workplace standards and its rules for preventing exposure to hazardous chemicals and bloodborne pathogens. [Pg.152]
