In their original investigations, Ayscough and Steacie42 stressed the simplicity of the reaction scheme and were unable to identify any product which could arise from the reactions of a trifluoroacetyl radical. Further, the ratio of quantum yields of carbon monoxide and hexa-fluoroethane was always close to unity, a fact which has been confirmed by later workers. Recently, Tucker and Whittle43 have shown that when hexafluoroacetone is photolyzed in the presence of excess bromine, trifluoroacetyl bromide is formed, suggesting that the trifluoroacetyl radical must intervene. The absence of hexafluorodiacetyl in the photolysis products of hexafluoroacetone is explained by the assumption that it is not stable. In fact, however, hexafluorodiacetyl may be prepared by the chromium trioxide oxidation of l,l,l,4,4,4-hexafluoro-2,3-di-... 

The structure of tris(l,l,l,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedionato)chromium(III) has been determined by gas-phase electron diffraction.767 A most interesting feature of this study was that the normalized ligand bite angle [(O—O/M—O) 30.1°] was very close to the value found in the solid state by X-ray diffraction (30.8°) but quite different to the value predicted by Kepert s model,768 The results of this and related work on vapour phase structures are summarized in Table 80.

We have also expanded our studies to include chromium(III) systems. However, for the chromium centers we have chosen the more volatile tri-fluoro (tfa") and hexafluoro (hfa ) derivatives of 2,4-pentanedione. Since the fluorinated derivatives are deactivated relative to the electrophilic attack used in these polymerizations, the Cr(acac)2(tfa) mixed ligand complex has been used initially to obtain polymeric products with sulfur halides. Whereas the intrinsic viscosity of one of the polymers so obtained was 0.17 dL/g, the GPC results suggest only oligomeric products. 

G. Simonneaux et al. (57) published the synthesis and complexation to ruthenium(II) and iron(in) m 5(9-tetraphenylporphyrins of two new fluorinated alkyl isocyanides, 2-monofluoroethyl isocyanide and 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl isocyanide. A new synthesis of trifluoromethyl isocyanide, pentafluoroethyl isocyanide and heptafluoropropyl isocyanide from R-N=Cp2 (R = CF3, C2F5, C3F7) using triphenyl phosphine has been reported (58). Geometries and HOMO and LUMO energies of fluorinated vinyl isocyanides have been calculated (59). Pentacarbonyl chromium complexes of both isomers of the first fluorinated diisocyanide, l,2-diisocyano-l,2,3,3,4,4-hexafluoro cyclobutane have been isolated from a [2+2] cycloaddition reaction of pentacarbonyl(trifluorovinyl isocyanide) chromium.
