However, in a certain nnmber of cases, we can carry out uninterrupted measurements by thermogravimetry. This will be the case if the reaction is accompanied by a gaseons emission representing a variation in the mass of the solid phase. It will also be the case each time the reaction consumes or produces a solid with a specific magnetic property (ferromagnetic or paramagnetic) very different from that of the other involved solids. Thermomagnetometry is then used [THO 83a] (see section 1.8.2.2). [Pg.493]

Interest is maintained ia these materials because of the combination of mechanical, corrosion, electric, and magnetic properties. However, it is their ferromagnetic properties that lead to the principal appHcation of glassy metals. The soft magnetic properties and remarkably low coercivity offer tremendous opportunities for this appHcation (see Magnetic materials, bulk Magnetic materials, thin film). [Pg.333]

Figure 5b. Variation in the magnetic properties of metal clusters are investigated by measuring the depletion of a highly collimated cluster beam by an inhomogeneous magnetic field. Fe clusters and their oxides (FexO and Fex02) at several applied fields. The uniform depletion of Fe clusters indicates that their magnetic moments increase approximately linearly with number of atoms, as would be anticipated for incipient ferromagnetic iron. Unexpected, however, is the much larger depletion of iron oxide clusters. Figure 5b. Neither element gg nor element ii are ferromagnetic, but their magnetic properties change when they are combined with each other chemically or physically, in alloys. [Pg.55]
