Properties. The physical properties of aHphatic fluorine compounds containing chlorine are similar to those of the PECs or HECs (3,5). They usually have high densities and low boiling points, viscosities, and surface tensions. The irregularity in the boiling points of the fluorinated methanes, however, does not appear in the chlorofluorocarbons. Their boiling points consistently increase with the number of chlorines present. The properties of some CECs and HCECs are shown in Tables 3 and 4. [Pg.284]

The term CFCs is a general abbreviation for ChloroFluoroCarbons. They have been extensively used since their discovery in the thirties, mainly as refrigerant, foam blowing agent, or solvent because of their unique properties (non toxic, non flammable, cheap). However, after the first warning of Rowland and Molina [1] in 1974 that CFCs could destroy the protective ozone layer, the world has moved rapidly towards a phase-out of CFCs. Because the destruction of stratospheric ozone would lead to an increase of harmful UV-B radiation reaching the earth s surface, the production and use of CFCs is prohibited (since January 1, 1995 in the European Union and since January 1, 1996 worldwide). [Pg.369]

Amorphous fluoropolymers have many applications in the areas of advanced materials where they are used in applications requiring thermal and chemical resistance. Their manufacture is hindered by their low solubility in many solvents. Many fluoropolymerizations cannot be carried out in hydrocarbon solvents because the radical abstraction of hydrogen atoms leads to detrimental side reactions. Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) replacements have recently been used for their lower stability and because they have carbon-hydrogen bonds, which means that their atmospheric lifetime is expected to be much shorter than those of CFCs. The adsorption properties of l,l,2-trichloro-l,2,2-trifluoroethane (CFC 113) and its replacement compounds, l,l-dichloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane (HCFC123), 1,1-dichloro-l-fluoroethane (HCFC141b), and l,l-dichloro-l,2,2,3,3-pentafluoropropane (HCFC225ca) on four kinds of activated carbons were investigated. The adsorption isotherms of inhalational anesthetics (halothane, chloroform, enflurane, isoflurane, and methoxyflurane) on the activated carbon were measured to evaluate the action mechanism of inhalational anesthesia. The anesthesia of CFC replacements can be estimated by the Freundlich constant N of the adsorption isotherms (Tanada et al., 1997). [Pg.214]

All chlorofluorocarbons have some fire-extinguishing properties even carbon tetrachloride was used at one time in small, handheld fire extinguishers. Flowever, bromofluorocarbons (BFCs) are exceptional because the bromine atom interferes most effectively with the radical propagation mechanism of the flame.
