Chloral formamide

Chloraniformethan (1), introduced under the trade name Imugan , is one of these important fungicides. Its chemical composition is N-[2,2,2-trichloro-I-(3,4-dichloroaniIine)ethyl]formamide. Synthesis starts with chloral (2), which, in reaction with formamide (3) gives chloral-formamide [(2,2,2-trichloro-l-hydroxyethyl) formamide] (4). This reacts with 3,4-dichlorophenyl isocyanate (5) via the formation of the carbamic acid ester (6) as intermediate, to yield, after rapid carbon dioxide elminiation, the end-product (1) (Malz et ai, 1966., Dorker and Schrader, 1963),... 

Sidorova, Khaloimov and Zukovskij ( 19 Vol. 3,p. 1) gave similar observations for water with different acceptors with the following concentrations of the break of acetamide x2 3 10 4 chloral hydrate x2 10-3 hexanolx2 10-3 urethane x2 10-3 ethyl ether x2 3 10-2 formamide x2 = 5 10" 2. 

When chloral is cleaved by treatment with a primary or secondary amine, the substituted formamide is obtained in good yield (cf. page 545) ... 

A special class of enamino and enamidophosphonates is available from 1,2,2,2-tetrachloroethylformamide (obtained from chloral and formamide) and triethyl phosphite. The resulting formamidophosphonate may be hydrolysed to the corresponding aminophosphonate. Base treatment of the amido and aminophosphonate leads to enamido- or enamino-phosphonates, respectively. The former can be converted into oxazoles (or thiazoles ), which in turn can be converted into phosphonoglycine amides (equation 104). ...

Chlorination of cellulose with methane sulphonyl chloride in A, 7V-dimethyl-formamide and chloral was rapid and selective, initially at C-6. When most of the primary hydroxy- groups had been replaced reaction occurred at 0-3 to yield 3,6-dichloro-3,6-dideoxy-D-allose residues. Gel permeation chromatography was used to investigate cellulose degradation during chlorination. 

In preparing derivatives of whole starch, the granules are reacted directly only at the risk of extensive degradation. Consequently, it is desirable to swell or disorganize the granules by some type of pretreatment employing either water, aqueous chloral hydrate, aqueous pyridine, formamide, or alkali. A readily reactive form of whole starches or of the components is obtained by precipitation of their aqueous solutions with ethanol.
