Chitosan-PEO

For the preparation of nanoparticles based on two aqueous phases at room temperature one phase contains chitosan and poly(ethylene oxide) and the other contains sodium tripolyphosphate. The particle size (200-1000 nm) and zeta potential (between -i- 20 mV and -l- 60 mV) could be modulated by varying the ratio chitosan/PEO-PPO. These nanoparticles have great proteinloading capacity and provide continuous release of the entrapped protein (particularly insulin) for up to one week [100,101]. [Pg.161]

Chondrocytes (Bhattarai et al. 2005 Suhramanian et al. 2005) and osteoblasts (Bhattarai et al. 2005) were shown to grow well on chitosan blend nanofibers. In a comparative study, cell viability on polymer film, nanofiber mat and PS surfaces has been reported. Chondrocyte cell proliferation (10 days of culture) on the chitosan/PEO scaffolds was 81% of that obtained for tissue-culture-grade polystyrene surfaces while that for film geometry was about 56% (Suhramanian et al. 2005). [Pg.208]

The electrical properties of polymer electrolytes based on chitosan/PEO blends with LiTFSI salt were described by Idris et al. Conductivities between 10 and 10 S/cm were reported for samples based on swelling chitosan membranes and ammonium salts (NH4NO3 and NH4CF3SO3), which in water promote the protonation of chitosan amino groups, leading to protonic conductivity. ... [Pg.110]

PEO is frequently used to faeilitate eleetrospinning of diffieult to proeess polymers, since it has good electro-spinnability, bioeompatibility and solubility in aqueous solutions. Duan et al. [168] reported that ultrafine fibers eould not be eleetrospim from chitosan solution in aqueous acetic acid, but formed when a eertain amoimt of PEO was added. Phase separation might have occurred which resulted in chitosan and PEO rich fibers of different diameters. Lou et al. [169] foimd that the chitosan/PEO ratio is an important factor in fiber formation, and a ratio of 60 40 resulted in the optimum fiber mat morphology with fiber diameters below 100 nm. They also confirmed the non-toxicity and the enhanced cell proliferation of the ehitosan/PEO fiber mats. By heating the polymer solution with hot air before it was ejected, Desai et al. [166] was able to electrospin blend solution with PEO concentration as low as 5% without bead formation. [Pg.711]

Vondran et al. [170] reported electrospun chitosan/PEO nanofiber mats cross-linked with GA and eompared them with ones without cross-linking. Results showed mechanical properties ehange with exposure time but generally cross-linking tended to increase the stiffiiess and deerease the duetility of the electrospun mats. [Pg.711]
