During the past 20 years, considerable progress has been made toward understanding the electronic properties of iron-sulfur centers thanks to the fruitful interplay between various approaches such as synthetic analog chemistry, theoretical modeling, and of course spectroscopic studies. Modeling studies have been strongly stimulated by the permanent supply of complementary data provided especially by EPR, Mossbauer, ENDOR, MCD, and NMR experiments. However,... [Pg.421]

Instead of a theory to elucidate the important unsolved problems of chemistry, theoretical chemistry has become synonymous with what is also known as Quantum Chemistry. This discipline has patently failed to have any impact on the progress of mainstream chemistry. A new edition of the world s leading Physical Chemistry textbook [4] was published in the year that the Nobel prize was awarded to two quantum chemists, without mentioning either the subject of their work, nor the names of the laureates. Nevertheless, the teaching of chemistry, especially at the introductory level, continues in terms of handwaiving by reference to the same quantum chemistry, that never penetrates the surface of advanced quantum theory. [Pg.558]

Mechanisms of Mo environmental chemistry. Many of the chemical reactions that shape the distribution of Mo in the environment are still not well imderstood, as seen above in discussions of Mo adsorption to Mn oxides and removal in reducing systems. It is likely that different reaction pathways will impart different isotope effects. Hence, coupling of laboratory and well-constrained field studies should provide new insights into Mo environmental chemistry. Theoretical modeling of Mo isotope effects would also be useful in this context, as is proving true for Fe isotopes (Schauble et al. 2001). [Pg.449]

Only a couple of weeks later, the first two of a large number of other researchers, J.F. Norris and W.W. Sanders, made their views on Gomberg s discovery public," and Gomberg soon found himself embroiled in a lively discussion of his proposal. Over a period of 15 years, he published some 30 papers in defense of the free radical concept, and in the end it prevailed. He has since been quoted as the discoverer of the first free radical in almost every textbook of organic chemistry and, in retrospect, one can see this discovery as one of the most important in 20th century chemistry, theoretically as well as practically. [Pg.59]
