Chemical synthesis replacements

Historically, the use of acetylene as raw material for chemical synthesis has depended strongly upon the avadabihty of alternative raw materials. The United States, which until recendy appeared to have limitless stocks of hydrocarbon feeds, has never depended upon acetylene to the same extent as Germany, which had more limited access to hydrocarbons (1). During Wodd War 1 the first manufacture of a synthetic mbber was undertaken ia Germany to replace imported natural mbber, which was no longer accessible. Acetylene derived from calcium carbide was used for preparation of... [Pg.101]

The second most important group of immobilized enzymes is stiU the penicillin G and V acylases. These are used in the pharmaceutical industry to make the intermediate 6-aminopenici11anic acid [551-16-6] (6-APA), which in turn is used to manufacture semisynthetic penicillins, in particular ampicilHn [69-53-4] and amoxicillin [26787-78-0]. This is a remarkable example of how a complex chemical synthesis can be replaced with a simple enzymatic one ... [Pg.291]

Many standard reactions that are widely applied in the production of fine chemicals employ. strong mineral or Lewis acids, such as sulphuric acid and aluminium chloride, often in stoichiometric quantities. This generates waste streams containing large amounts of spent acid, which cannot easily be recovered and recycled. Replacement of these soluble mineral and Lewis acids by recyclable. solid acids, such as zeolites, acid clays, and related materials, would represent a major breakthrough, especially if they functioned in truly catalytic quantities. Consequently, the application of solid acids in fine chemicals synthesis is currently the focus of much attention (Downing et al., 1997). [Pg.42]

Reactions involving a solvent under reflux require the use of modified commercial microwave ovens. In these modified systems the oven is perforated on the top to accommodate a reflux condenser and a 10 cm pipe is used to avoid microwave leakage the turnable dish is replaced by a magnetic stirrer or by monomode reactors especially designed for chemical synthesis [15]. [Pg.296]

Supercritical water (SCW) presents a unique combination of aqueous and non-aqueous character, thus being able to replace an organic solvent in certain kinds of chemical synthesis. In order to allow for a better understanding of the particular properties of SCW and of its influence on the rate of chemical reactions, molecular dynamics computer simulations were used to determine the free energy of the SN2 substitution reaction of Cl- and CH3C1 in SCW as a function of the reaction coordinate [216]. The free energy surface of this reaction was compared with that for the gas-phase and ambient water (AW) [248], In the gas phase, an ion-dipole complex and a symmetric transition... [Pg.344]

As the latter were not easily accessible by chemical synthesis at that time, new methods of preparing these ferrocene derivatives were developed and introduced in 1969. It was then proved that the U-4CRs of chiral a-ferrocenyl-alkylamines can form diastereomeric a-aminoacid derivatives stereo-selectively, and it was further shown that after the reaction the a-ferrocenyl groups of the products can be replaced by protons, thus resynthesizing the chiral a-ferrocenyl-alkylamines simultaneously." Later, the development of this ferrocene chemistry was given up since such syntheses cannot form the products in sufficient quantity and stereoselective purity. ... [Pg.14]

The ultimate greening of fine chemical synthesis is the replacement of multistep syntheses by the integration of several atom-efficient catalytic steps. For example. Figure 9.9 shows the new Rhodia, salt-free caprolactam process involving three catalytic steps. The last step involves cyclization in the vapor phase over an alumina catalyst in more than 99% conversion and more than 99.5% selectivity. [Pg.197]

The purpose of this research was to explore the representation, manipulation, and utilization of strategic knowledge in organic synthesis planning. The method we decided to explore was to create an axiomatic theory to replace our intuitive theory about chemical synthesis. This formal method of reasoning is very powerful in that it completely eliminates any questions about the method used to reach a conclusion. Since any conclusions reached would be theorems of the axiomatic theory, the acceptability of the conclusions rests completely on the acceptability of the postulates and not upon the method of reasoning. We are then free to focus on the chemical principles which are provided as postulates. [Pg.188]

Hydrogen peroxide is used in pulp and paper (50%, as a replacement for chlorine in kraft bleaching) environmental control, including municipal and industrial water treatment (17%) chemical synthesis (15%) and textiles... [Pg.229]

In the 1930s it was discovered that the pyrolysis of alkanes produced large quantities of olefins. This pyrolysis process is not very selective, but the costs of separation were cheaper, and scaleup was simpler and safer in making ethylene rather than acetylene so during the 1940s ethylene and other small olefins replaced acetylene as the major building block in chemical synthesis. We will consider the reactions and reactors used in olefin synthesis from alkanes in the next chapter. [Pg.131]
