A batch, 48-cm ID pilot-scale FBR was used to produce more than 60 kg of activated carbon from C2 coal. Pilot tests were conducted at Svedala Inc., a chemical process equipment firm located in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. Five pilot production tests were made. The processing conditions employed in the pilot production runs were comparable to those identified during the bench-scale studies of coal C2 except that about 50 kg of <0.25 mm coal was typically used. [Pg.470]

Thus, while a well-maintained instrument is important for any chemical/physical measurement, in NIR, without a concurrent standard for comparison, it is critical that the instrument be continuously calibrated and maintained. Since the major manufacturers of equipment have worked with the pharmaceutical industry, this has been formalized into what is called IQ/OQ/PQ, or Instrument Qualification, Operational Qualification, and Performance Qualification. The first is routinely performed (at first) by the manufacturer in the lab/process location, the second in situ by the user with help from the manufacturer, and the third is product/use dependent. These formal tests apply to all instruments in any industry. [Pg.173]

Like morphine, codeine is extracted from natural opium, obtained from the poppy plant (Papaver somniferum). Only when it was first discovered and tested was codeine purified directly from opium (see Chapter 1). Today pharmaceutical-grade codeine is synthesized from morphine through the relatively simple chemical modification process of methylation, whereby CHj replaces a hydrogen atom on the morphine molecule. The chemical substitution reaction that takes place (H for CHj) does so at a specific location on the morphine molecule (Figure 3.1) if the substitution were to occur elsewhere on... [Pg.28]

Tier 2 PRA process involved developing environmental exposure data and chronic toxicity data distributions for individual POPs. The mean concentrations of POPs in local marine water measured at various locations were used as exposure data in the construction of the exposure distribution. The chronic toxicity data distribution was established based on published international acute toxicity data (LC50, EC50) on a variety of aquatic organisms tested in many jurisdictions, drawn primarily from the USEPA ECOTOX database (2002) (available at http //www.epa.gov/ ecotox). If the upper 5th centile of the measured chemical exposure data distribution did not exceed the lower 5th centile of its estimated chronic toxicity distribution, the potential ecological risk posed by the chemical was judged to be tolerable (Hall and Giddings, 2000). [Pg.349]

The next stage in the research project will focus upon those location points where significant variation exists, or where the data collected are puzzling. Selection of a limited number of points for the physical and chemical testing would preserve at least part of the evidence and assist in the search for information about the character of the fiber. An array of instrumental analyses would be designed to yield essential data about the textile evidence and its mineralization processes. [Pg.467]
