Chart formatting is accomplished by using commands in the Chart menu in the Chart Menu Bar, or by using the Format command in the Edit menu in the Chart Menu Bar. 

When you activate an embedded chart (by clicking cn it) or switch to a chart sheet, the Worksheet Menu Bar is replaced by the Chart Menu Bar. The first four commands in the Chart menu — Chart Type..., Source Data..., Chart... 

USING CHART TYPE... IN THE CHART MENU TO SWITCH FROM ONE CHART TYPE TO ANOTHER... 

If you created a chart as an XY Scatter plot, for example, you can change it to another chart format by choosing Chart Type... from the Chart menu, then choosing any of the other chart types. Fifteen standard types, as well as a number of more specialized custom types, such as a combination Line-Column chart, are available. 

To add text to the chart, choose Chart Options... from the Chart menu and choose the Titles tab. The resulting dialog box, identical to Figure 2-3 but now called Chart Options, lets you add text for the chart title or the labels for the X- or Y axes. When you enter text in the Chart Title input box, for example, the title text will appear in the sample chart. Excel wraps the text if it is too long to fit on one line. In the same way you can add or remove gridlines or a legend. 

If you created an embedded chart and would like to convert it to a separate chart sheet, simply activate the chart, choose Location... from the Chart menu, press the As New Sheet option button, then press OK. The embedded chart will be converted into a chart on a separate chart sheet. To put a copy of an embedded chart on a separate chart sheet, first make a copy of the chart, then follow the same procedure. 

Once the desired chart element has been selected, choose Format from the Chart Menu Bar. In Excel 2000 there is a single context-sensitive menu command in the Format menu, which appears as Selected Axis..., Selected Data Series..., etc., depending on which chart element is selected. 

Activate the chart. Choose Chart Type... from the Chart menu and choose the Custom Types tab. 

With the chart as the active document, select the chart text element (Chart Title, X Axis Title, Y Axis Title or Unattached Text) by using the Chart menu or by clicking on the chart text element if it already exists in the chart. 

Choose Source Data... from the Chart menu and choose the Series tab. The Series dialog box displays the range of x values and y values for a selected series. Enter the new ranges for x and y and press OK. 

To add a trendline, select the chart by clicking on it, then choose Add Trendline... from the Chart menu. If the chart has several data series, either select the desired data series before choosing Add Trendline... or choose the desired data series from the Based On Series box. 

This step necessary only in Excel 97/98.) Choose the Toolbars tab, then check the box for, or double-click on, the Worksheet Menu Bar or Chart Menu Bar to display a customizable copy of the menu bar. 

To use the macro, simply Open Labeler2.xls it will appear on screen and then Hide itself. It installs a new menu command, "Add Data Labels..." in the Chart menu. To view the workbook, containing the macro and two sample charts. Unhide the workbook. 

To add data labels to a data series, click on the chart (you can pre-select the data series or choose it later in the dialog box). Choose "Add Data Labels..." in the Chart menu. This will display the Apply Data Labels dialog box. Choose the desired options and the range of cells on die worksheet that contain the data labels, then press OK. 

A similar situation applies to Excel 97. Here, Trendline is part of the Chart menu, and the shorthand instruction might read Chart => Trendline. Butyou will usually not find Chart on the menu bar. It only appears there, instead of Data, after you have activated the chart, and again becomes accessible only afteryouhave selected a particular data set. 

Likewise, in Excel 97 and beyond, the default settings for graphs are accessible after you activate a chart to make the Chart menu available. Now select Chart => Chart Type, under Chart type pick your choice, such asXY(Scatter), select a Chart sub-type such as with all data points connected by smoothed...
