Entering Text

If you enter text characters (any character other than numbers, the decimal point, or the characters +, -,, /,, %) in a cell. Excel will recognize the entry as... 

To add text to the chart, choose Chart Options... from the Chart menu and choose the Titles tab. The resulting dialog box, identical to Figure 2-3 but now called Chart Options, lets you add text for the chart title or the labels for the X- or Y axes. When you enter text in the Chart Title input box, for example, the title text will appear in the sample chart. Excel wraps the text if it is too long to fit on one line. In the same way you can add or remove gridlines or a legend. 

You may enter text, numbers, or formulas in specific cells. Formulas are the key to the utility of spreadsheets, allowing the same calculation to be applied to many numbers. We will illustrate with calculations of the weights of water delivered by two different 20-mL pipets, from the difference in the weights of a flask plus water and the empty flask. Refer to Figure 3.4 as you go through the steps. 

Open an Excel spreadsheet by clicking on the Excel icon (or the Microsoft Excel program under Start Programs). You will enter text, numbers, and formulas. Double click on the specific cell to activate it. Enter as follows (information typed into a cell is entered by depressing the Enter key) ... 

After writing a title in cell Al, enter the constants gq to g in column A. Column B is labeled Temp (°C) and column C is labeled Density (g/mL) . Enter values of temperature in column B. In cell C4, type the formula = A 5 + A 7 B4 + A 9 B4 2 + A 11 B4 3 , which uses the exponent symbol to compute and T. When you enter the formula, the number 0.999 97 is computed in cell C4. The remainder of column C is completed with a Fill Down command. The spreadsheet is not finished until it is documented by entering text in cells A13 and A14 to show what formula was used in column C.

Text entry should be limited Methods should be followed to reduce the instances where the user needs to enter long text data (e.g., a long universal resource locator [URL]). A list of commonly entered text messages will be available. 

WMClosedCaption Displays the entered text in the captioning window defined with scripting. Closed Captioned for the hearing impaired. 

WMTextB ody text Displays the entered text in the text window that is defined with scripting. This is some narrative text in the body of the HTML document, like the lyrics to a song, for example. 

Title Displays the entered text on the RealPlayer s title bar. Rodrigue et Chimene... 

There are a number of commercial microcomputer-based spreadsheet packages. The general setup of each of these packages is the same that is, there are predefined rows and columns. Numbers are used to designate the rows and letters are used to name the columns. Every combination of a column name and row number locates a specific cell. In each cell, one can enter text, a number, or a mathematical formula. The information present in the entire set of cells forming the grid is stored in computer memory, and the resulting template can be altered as well as updated.
