Natural sand is a major component of most flowable fill mixes. Ferrous spent foundry sand can be used as substitute for natural sand (fine aggregate) in flowable fill.48 49 Spent sands from nonferrous foundries and foundry baghouse dust can contain high concentrations of heavy metals that may preclude their use in flowable fill applications. Some of the engineering properties of spent foundry sand that are of particular interest when foundry sand is used in flowable fill applications include particle shape, gradation, strength characteristics, soundness, deleterious substances, and corrosivity. [Pg.188]

Mg. In vapour phase, unstable Cd2 molecules have been detected (bond energy about 7.4KJmol ). Cd exhibits a certain stability when exposed to dry air, but in the presence of moisture it is slowly covered with an oxide layer. It is softer and more malleable than Zn and can be easily laminated, extruded, drawn, and processed. A characteristic sound (a sort of scream) is generated on bending a bar of the metal. Cd shows a great resistance to corrosion, a low-melting point, and excellent electrical conduction. Unlike zinc, Cd has... [Pg.525]

The names of the different amino acids have been given three-letter and one-letter abbreviations (Table 6.1). The three-letter abbreviations use the first two letters in the name plus the third letter of the name or the letter of a characteristic sound, such as trp for tryptophan. The one-letter abbreviations use the first letter of the name of the most frequent amino acid in proteins (such as an A for alanine). If the first letter has already been assigned, the letter of a characteristic sound is used (such as an R for arginine). Single-letter abbreviations are usually used to denote the amino acids in a polypeptide sequence. [Pg.75]

According to some biochemists, "W" stands for the characteristic sound in "twyptophan" (see Table... [Pg.75]

In muscular disease, needle EMG waveforms vary in strength, waveshape, and frequency content. For example, in muscular dystrophy, the EMG action events are low in amplitude, short in duration (1 to 2 ms), and high in frequency (up to 40 per second). When the bioelectric signals are introduced into a loudspeaker so that they can be heard, there is a high-pitched characteristic sound. These diseased muscles fatigue easily, and this is reflected in their action events that are greatly reduced with sustained contraction. [Pg.433]

The handheld microphone, probably the most popular type of microphone, is available in many shapes and sizes. Manufactured in both directional and nondirectional versions, the handheld microphone provides wide frequency response, low handling noise, and a wide choice of characteristic sounds. Because adequate space is available, a shock-mount system is incorporated into most professional handheld microphones. Just holding a microphone or dragging the cable across a floor can cause low-frequency noise to be transmitted to the cartridge. A shock-mount system minimizes such noise. [Pg.284]

The sound intensity level generated by a source of sound within its effective range depends on the properties of the source of sound (sound output, directional characteristics, sound spectrum), the location of the source and the receiver, the terrain (and on any obstacles in the path of sound), the local propagation conditions determined by local topography, growth and cultivation, and from meteorological conditions. [Pg.312]

Some of the problems often encountered during ultrasonic inspection of plane specimens are also found on cylindrical specimens. For example, problems associated with the directional characteristic of the ultrasonic transducer. Furthermore, the discontinuity influences the shape and propagation direction of a reflected pulse, causing wave mode transformation. In addition, the specimen influences the shape and amplitude of the reflected pulse by sound absorption. [Pg.200]

The materials are austenitic stainless steel (Hereafter,it is said SUS304), ductile cast iron (Hereafter, it is said FCD500), and pure Ni. The composition of the materials is shown in Table. 1. Moreover, the sound characteristic of the materials and air as the defect are shown in Table.2. [Pg.834]

The main characteristic properties of asbestos fibers that can be exploited in industrial appHcations (8) are their thermal, electrical, and sound insulation nonflammabiUty matrix reinforcement (cement, plastic, and resins) adsorption capacity (filtration, Hquid sterilization) wear and friction properties (friction materials) and chemical inertia (except in acids). These properties have led to several main classes of industrial products or appHcations... [Pg.354]

Physical Properties. Most of the physical properties discussed herein depend on the direction of measurement as compared to the bedding plane of the coal. Additionally, these properties vary according to the history of the piece of coal. Properties also vary between pieces because of coal s britde nature and the crack and pore stmcture. One example concerns electrical conductivity. Absolute values of coal sample specific conductivity are not easy to determine. A more characteristic value is the energy gap for transfer of electrons between molecules, which is deterrnined by a series of measurements over a range of temperatures and is unaffected by the presence of cracks. The velocity of sound is also dependent on continuity in the coal. [Pg.221]

Satisfactory engine performance is assured by maintaining a minimum log that allows comparison of present characteristics with past records of (1) cylinder exhaust, cooling water, and supercharger exhaust temperature for similar loadings, (2) running sounds and smokiness of exhaust, and (3) engine efficiency and losses. [Pg.2493]

Internal surfaces were heavily tuberculated. The circumferential weldbacking ring was heavily corroded (Fig. 6.21). The perforation shown in Fig. 6.10 occurred at the ring, which was entirely consumed by corrosion in places. At intact areas the weld was sound, showing adequate penetration and no unusual characteristics. [Pg.147]

Consideration of the basic elements characteristic of the galvanic corrosion process, as discussed above, points to the principles of sound preventive techniques. Since a galvanic potential difference is the driving force for corrosion reducing the magnitude of this difference can reduce or prevent galvanic corrosion. [Pg.363]

The polymers combine a high level of flame retardancy with good thermal insulation and sound absorption characteristics. Densities are somewhat high (16-20 kg/m ). [Pg.808]

Directivity The characteristic associated with sound energy in the form of waves moving in a straight line from the source. [Pg.1429]
