Chance coincidences

Sudden death has occurred in patients with preexisting heart disease on antidepressant therapy. It may be difficult, however, to separate a causally related drug effect from a cardiovascular incident precipitated by other factors and only by chance coincident with drug therapy. Furthermore, Roose ( 418), who has summarized the literature, noted that major depressive disorder occurs frequently after a myocardial infarct and may adversely affect the recovery process. [Pg.146]

Because of the paucity of events, it is necessary to evaluate the probability for chance coincidence. Several statistical tests were made with random numbers, and the probability for chance coincidences ranges between 1 and 3 95. [Pg.423]

Since the pulses from the two detectors arrive randomly, a certain number of accidental (or chance) coincidences will always be recorded. Let... [Pg.335]

Vibrationally Excited Ozone.—Ozone can be promoted to its (001) vibrational level as a result of chance coincidences between lines in the (001,000) fundamental band of Os and lines from a COa laser, the strongest overlap being with the P(30) line in the 9.6 /um band. This has been the basis for a number of experimental studies of the enhanced reactions of Osf with NO, 02( ), and SO. ... [Pg.47]

The discussion to this point assumes an ideal world, never realized in experimental physics. Most importantly, a backgrmmd count rate arising from chance coincidences between the muon and positron counters needs to be added in eq. (45). If we assume this background to be independent of time (which is reasonable but not always proven), then we have... [Pg.112]

The above names are sometimes repeated (austrium, vestium) or coincide with the names of real elements (actinium, ruthenium). These are chance coincidences. The elements denoted with an asterisk are of special interest. In their cases there are grounds to think that the analysed specimens indeed contained unknown elements which could not be identified. Here it would be more correct to speak about unrecognized, rather than false, elements. For instance, amarillium and davyum could, apparently, be regarded as possible precursors of rhenium, and nipponium as a precursor of hafnium. [Pg.264]

Some of the difficulties are reduced if the second process is predissociation, and this method has been used to produce N2 enriched in This experiment hinges on the chance coincidence of a line in the 1 2 fundamental band of with the P(16) line in the 10.6 ftm branch of a CO2... [Pg.8]

One is tempted to inquire how far the unsuspected aptness of some of these beliefs and sayings to the point of view so recently disclosed [on radioactive transmutation] is the result of mere chance or coincidence, and how far it may be the evidence of a wholly unknown and unsuspected ancient civilization of which all other relic has disappeared. It was curious to reflect, for example, upon the... [Pg.162]

It is possible that the rapid drop in biomass of the assay Insects feeding on leaves from attacked and control trees coincided with reload of the test trees by chance, possibly due to the rapid spread of a pathogen through the laboratory Insect population (11). On the other hand, the possibility that reload of the test trees caused the biomass drop in both test and control assay Insects cannot be discounted. Both attacked and nearby unattacked control willows may have rapidly decreased the food quality of their leaves in response to a sudden Increase In biomass of Insects on the attacked trees. If so, this suggests that unattacked willows are sensitive to signals from the Insects or nearby attacked willows. This possibility was investigated in the following experiment. [Pg.60]

On the other hand, no differences were found in growth or mortality of tent caterpillars fed leaves from unattacked willows compared to those fed leaves from willows attacked by tent caterpillars (Figure IB). Reload of the attacked trees with additional tent caterpillars coincided with a rapid decrease in biomass and an increased mortality of Insects fed leaves from both attacked and unattacked control trees. This could have been by chance, but it suggested the possibility that both attacked and control trees exhibited a rapid decrease in food quality in response to the addition of more insects to the attacked trees. If so, this suggested that unattacked willows were sensitive to signals from nearby attacked willows or the attacking Insects. An experiment to test this hypothesis produced positive results (Figure 2). [Pg.67]

Practically concurrent with the growing utilization of automatic computers in industry has been the expanding use of various spectrometric methods for routine laboratory analyses. This coincidence is not entirely due to chance, because it seems doubtful that these analytical methods could have achieved their present wide acceptance had it not been practical for computers to do the calculations associated with them. These calculations are quite similar in the several applications, involving the solution of a system of linear simultaneous equations for each analysis. [Pg.342]

Alternative theory 2 is that because the sender and percipient were members of the same culture and people of one culture think about many things in common, the similarity between the two drawings is simply a matter of coincidence or chance. [Pg.20]

This book is the outcome of Said s move to Auburn University and his chance moving in next door to Frank. It was born by a wonderful coincidence ... [Pg.596]
