Cereal agricultural production

In spite of the fact that contamination of cereals and grains and related products with mycotoxins causes food and feed-bome intoxications in man and livestock, zearalenone in low concentrations can be treated as a plant hormone which influences the development and yield of crop plants (Biesaga-Koscielniak 2001). This review focuses on the effect of low doses of zearalenone on the stimulation of selected physiological processes in plants important for agriculture production.

The development of genetically engineered plants offers the prospect of pharmaceutical production from crops as well as improved yields for cereals, vegetables and other agricultural products. The challenge will then be to find suitable bioseparations to enable the efficient isolation of such products. 

Zeralenone (ZEN). Many data indicated that deoxynivalenol (DON) was the major toxicant in grains in the USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Austria, Italy and South Africa. Also natural contamination of cereals and agricultural products by nivalenol, deoxynivalenol and T-2 toxin have been reported in China, USSR, Poland and France. 

Zineb is registered for use on all cereals, various vegetables as well as for treatment of many seeds. The signiflcance of zineb as a residue of agricultural products is enhanced by reports on toxicity of its degradation products such as ethylenethiourea. 

The categories of the purchased sustainable/organic agricultural products vegetables and rice took the lead, accounting for 54.9% and 36.5% respectively. Fruit accounted for 4.5% and cereal, agricultural processed products, and miscellaneous 4.2%.
