Because the ion-assisted processes enable deposition at temperatures less than 100°C, deposition of diamond like coatings has been attempted on a wide range of substrates, e.g., stainless steel, Copper, ceramics,optical materials (plastics, polymers and polycarbonates),glasses,quartz, sapphire,infrared-transmitting optical materials such as germanium, zinc sulfide and zinc selenide, and a variety of electronic grade materials. We have used one-dimensional model [3] to calculate the residual stresses in the system involving a ceramic-like (TiC) coating connected to a metal-like (Ti) substrate by an inter-mediate FGM region, consisting (ultimately after the interdiffusion anneal) of titanium carbide with a carbon concentration that varies with distance. The FGM plate has a thickness 2c, unit dimension in depth (z-direction) and is infinitely long in the x direction, as shown in Fig. 2.

Ceramic and/or glass-like coatings can be formed by heating the silicate pastes painted onto the itmer wall of the tubes. These coatings can completely cover the metallic surfaces and then decrease the probability of formation of coke deposits. The main composition of the coating is K2O, Si02 and AI2O3, etc. 

The increasing use of sihconized coatings for weather durabiUty caused severe masking problems for the all-metal, filter mesh-like catalyst elements available in the 1970s. Interest in catalytic afterburners increased when dispersed-phase precious metal—alumin a-on-ceramic honeycomb catalysts offered economically attractive results. 

In the thermal production of gold coatings on ceramics and glass, paints are used which comprise Au chloro-complexes and sulfur-containing resins dissolved in an organic solvent. It seems likely that polymeric species are responsible for rendering the gold soluble.
