Ceramic glaze formulations

Color Matching. Color matching is a process in which a technician prepares a formulation, ie, a mixture of pigments in a desired medium, that has the color effects desired by the customer. A good color match in one medium, eg, plastic, is not always a good match in another medium, eg, ceramic glaze. Thus the medium as well as the processing conditions have to be identical to those used by the customer. 

Borax pentahydrate occurs in nature as mineral tincalconite, formed by dehydration of borax. It has several industrial applications, mostly the same as its decahydrate. The pentahydrate is used in the manufacture of borosili-cate glass. It also is used in cleaning agents ceramic glaze adhesives cosmetics antifreeze and herbicide formulations. It is added to fertihzers to provide boron as a nutrient to the plants. 

Material for printing on glass can include ceramic glazes, epoxy formulations cured by heat, and UV-curing formulations. Ceramics. In ceramics, talc is widely used in wall tile and hobbyware bodies, in electrical porcelains, and in cordierite formulations. Wall tile and hobbyware ate talc—clay bodies that ate pressed and fast-fired to a high porosity (bisque) and then glazed and tefired to produce the final product. Talc containing tremolite and carbonate is preferred to ensure good porosity. 

Ceramics - Low-iron groimd silica, typically -200 mesh, and calcined silica are used in whiteware formulations to facilitate drying of the body, to control expansion characteristics and compatibility between the body and glaze to prevent crazing, and to provide whiteness and acid resistance. Ground silica is also used as a soiuce of Si02 in glazes and enamels.
