The search for extrasolar life requires us to find planets outside the solar system. But since stars are only visible as small dots of light, it will be very difficult to find planets in outer space, since these do not emit light. This is true even for the nearest star, Alpha Centauri, which is about 4.3 light years away (roughly 7,000 times the distance from the sun to Pluto). [Pg.293]

Abstract. We present preliminary results of an extensive low and high-resolution ESO-VLT spectroscopic survey of Subgiant stars in the stellar system uj Centauri. Basing on infrared Ca II triplet lines we derived metallicities and radial velocities for more than 110 stars belonging to different stellar populations of the system. The most metal rich component, the SGB-a, appears to have metallicity [Fe/H] -0.5. Moreover, SGB-a stars have been found to stray from the dynamical behaviour of the bulk population. Such evidence adds new puzzling questions on the formation and the chemical enrichment history of this stellar system. [Pg.156]

When you look up into the night sky, you never see red dwarfs. They re faint because of their small size and low temperature. Like many red dwarfs, Proxima or Alpha Centauri C is a flare star. Flare stars can brighten suddenly to many times their normal luminosity. The cause is thought to be a sudden and intense outburst of radiation on or above the star s surface. An increase in radio emission is often detected simultaneously with the optical outburst. [Pg.209]
