For the very first section of the borehole a base from which to commence drilling is required. In a land location this will be a cemented cellar in which a conductor or stove pipe will be piled prior to the rig moving in. The cellar will accommodate the Christmas tree (an arrangement of seals and valves), once the well has been completed and the rig has moved off location (Fig. 3.13)... [Pg.44]

A similar technique may also be applied later in the wells life to seal off perforations through which communication with the formation has become undesirable, for instance if water breakthrough has occurred ( squeeze cementation ). [Pg.56]

Cement is then placed across the open perforations and partially squeezed Into the formation to seal off all production zones. Oil well cements (78) are usually made from Pordand cement clinker and may also be blended cements. The American Petroleum Institute Specification for Materials and Testing for Well Cements API Specification 10) (78) includes requirements for nine classes of oil well cements. They are specially produced for cementing the steel casing of gas and oil wells to the walls of the bore-hole and to seal porous formations (79). Under these high temperature and pressure conditions ordinary Pordand cements would not dow propedy and would set prematurely. Oil well cements are more coarsely ground than normal, and contain special retarding admixtures. [Pg.296]

The annular space between the outer pipe and the surrounding rock is filled with cement over the whole depth up to the ground in new wells. The purpose of this is to seal the deposits at the top and to keep the fresh water and salt water zones separate. In addition, it serves as a protection against pressure from the rock and as corrosion protection which, however, is only effective so long as there is no current exit caused by extended corrosion of cells or due to foreign anodic influences. The cement Ailing of the borehole casing is usually not uniformly spread over the pipe surface. It has to be remembered that there can be sections which are either not covered or are only thinly covered with cement. [Pg.415]

Remediation commenced with the interception of the recoverable gasoline. One 4-in.-diameter vapor extraction well and three 2-in. vapor monitor wells were installed. Each well was constructed with 4 ft of well screen placed and filter packed across the unsaturated portion of the shale. The annulus of the wells was sealed to the surface with bentonite and cement grout according to local standards. The monitor wells were located in a triangular pattern around the vapor extraction well at distances of 5.3, 10.6, and 25.4 ft. [Pg.315]

Organic coatings are generally utilized to improve dispersability and flow characteristics of titania pigments. A fascinating array of substances are either used commercially or have been claimed as useful in the patent literature [6], Organics held in place simply by electrostatic forces [7] as well as those cemented to the surface by use of covalent bonds are known [8], The latter are inert to diffusion through the polymer matrix.
