Industrial wastes are responsible for a great part of environment deterioration. The construction industry has the potential to absorb some of these wastes, in the use of mortars and concrete production. Kaolin wastes were used to replace part of or total lime for the manufacture of mortars. These mortars were studied to determine the influence of water/cement ratio on compressive strength. The results were compared with those obtained for cement-lime mortars. Water content was fixed by the flow table standard. The influence of water/cement ratio was more important for the kaolin waste mortars than for cement-lime mortars (Nobrega et al., 2009). [Pg.288]

The Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity in Mostar, built between 1863 and 1873, was shelled on June 7,1992. On June 15 the belfiy was tom down and the church set on fire and blown up. The remains of the church were cleared in 2005 (Fig. 8.19). Later, a decision on the renovation of the church involving fuU reconstraction and maximum possible use of the existing preserved material was made. Based on this decision, the main project on the Renovation of the Cathedral Church in Mostar (architecture and stracture) was elaborated. Lime mortars The use of cement has been heavily criticized by environmentalists for the energy and emissions involved in its manufacture and for its inappropriate use. Mortars for laying and grouting paving materials can be made using less environmentally costly lime in place of cement. [Pg.135]

Up until the introduction and common usage of acid resistant mortar, the linings were laid up in the usual Portland cement/lime/sand mortar mixes. Although subjected to occasional acid attack conditions, these linings were able to last many years, due to the fact that they were kept mostly dry and could be repaired as needed by simply sandblasting and tuckpointing the damaged mortar areas.
