Cellulose sulfate esters Applications

Cellulose sulfate esters with the proper D.S. values are water soluble and have applications such as food thickeners, textile sizes, viscosity modifiers for oil-drilling muds and in pharmaceutical applications. 

Ion-Exchange Separations, inorganic esters of cellulose have been used in ion-exchange applications and as chromatographic adsorbents since the late 1950s (37). Cellulose sulfate and cellulose phosphate are excellent ion exchangers. Exposure of the ester to a salt of a metal ion (eg NaCl, KCl) or neutralization of the acid with a base (eg NaOH, KOH) will result in exchange of the metal ion from the salt or base onto the sulfate or phosphate attached to the cellulose backbone (Fig. 7). 

Nitrated cellulose acetate has been prepared, and nucleophilic replacement of nitrate groups of cellulose nitrate with halides has been performed. Oxidative decomposition of cellulose nitrate into a water-soluble material may be brought about by aqueous digestion at high temperature and high pressures, and this finds particular application in the determination of small proportions of the sulfate in cellulose nitrate. A route for the replacement of nitric ester groups in cellulose nitrate by sulfuric ester groups has been reported. ... 

Examples of surfactants for foaming include sodium dodecyl sulfate, cleaning compositions, lecithins, as well as pertinent derivatives of cellulose and other polysaccharides (33,34). For physical applications such as wound healing dressings, when a surfactant is included in the dried gelled foam, non-ionic surfactants, such as the ethoxylates of sorbitan esters, are preferred (34).
