Preservatives need to be hydrophilic as they act in the aqueous phase where micro-organisms live. To penetrate the cell wall of the micro-organism and interfere with the cell life cycle preservatives need to be hydrophobic as well. Because of the partly hydrophobic characteristics preservatives may diffuse into the lipophilic phase or will be solubilised in the aqueous phase. In this way the concentration of the preservative in the aqueous phase may become lower than required. Formulations of hydrophilic emulsions therefore will contain higher concentrations of preservatives than those of hydrophilic solutions. [Pg.242]
