Cell function general purpose

One of the functions of methanol is as a fuel for fuel cells. The general concept is that the best fuel for that purpose is hydrogen, and there is no doubt that the high ja ( 10 3 A cm 2) for hydrogen... 

Generally speaking we consider that most micro-organisms live and grow in aqueous environments, and that the cytoplasm within cells in which enzymes function is also aqueous. On die other hand, most lipids are only sparingly soluble in aqueous media. Cholesterol, for example, has a solubility of less than 2 mg l 1 (equivalent to a concentration of less than 5 pmol l 1). Even at much lower concentrations (25-40 nmol l 1) it tends to aggregate into micelles. There is, therefore, a general problem of how to supply lipid substrates at sufficient concentration to produce reaction kinetics that are appropriate for industrial purposes.

The dimers were studied more closely in HL-60 leukaemia and Jurkat cell lines, and it was found that they have activities comparable to the clinically nsed anticancer drng doxorubicin. In terms of general toxicity to normal cells, it was observed that dimers 115 and 116 were not toxic to lymphocytes at doses approaching 100 p,M. In preliminary studies, apoptotic cell death was observed on exposnre to these componnds and further studies are ongoing to elucidate the underlying mechanism of apoptosis. For purposes of comparison, the corresponding phosphate ester monomers 117 and 118 were prepared and proved to have no antitumour activity in the cell lines examined. This result is important, because it rules out any role of the phosphate ester functionality in mediating the observed cytotoxic effects and emphasizes the necessity for a bivalent unit. 

Cytotoxic cancer chemotherapeutic agents are immunosuppressive because they interfere with mononuclear cell multiplication and function. But they are generally too toxic for the above purposes and the following are principally used for intended immunosuppression ...
