Spiral waves and streaming patterns have recently been obtained in a computer simulation study which incorporates both the receptor desensitization model for cAMP signalling and cell chemotactic movements (Hbfer et al., 1995). The results of that study indicate that the chemotactic response of the amoebae favours the spontaneous occurrence of spiral patterns in the course of D. discoideum aggregation.
