This proposal draws on the DOT and NFPA concepts that utilize signs or label shapes with fixed colors for various hazard classes. The ASTM proposal uses the three LAPI signal words, Danger , Warning , and Caution to represent level of hazard, but in a change from other systems also uses color to indicate level of hazard. This system, thus, reinforces level of hazard by fixed shape, word and color.

Labeling. All analytical x-ray equipment shall be labeled with a readily discernible sign bearing the radiation symbol and the words (1) CAUTION - HIGH INTENSITY X-RAY BEAM on the x-ray source housing and (2) CAUTION RADIATION - THIS EQUIPMENT PRODUCES RADIATION WHEN ENERGIZED near any switch that energizes the x-ray tube. 

Fume hoods used for radioactive matedals should be marked RADIOISOTOPE HOOD and in addition should be labeled with a CAUTION—RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS sign bearing the standard radiation symbol. The isotopes being used should be identified on the label. Under some circumstances, specialized additional signs may be needed.

Laboratory corridor doors shall display approved CAUTION door signs.
