Caustic purity The recommended feed water quality is a resistance of greater than 200,000 ohm-cm (or less than 0.5 ppm calcium). However, impurities entering the catholyte compartment generally impose fewer problems than those entering the anolyte. 

In order to operate cobalt electrowinning in wider ranges of temperature and pH and produce high quality cobalt buttons, surfactants that do not interfere with solvent extraction should be tested. A proper surfactant does not necessarily need to decrease the catholyte surface tension significantly if it can reduce the interfacial tension between cobalt metal and the catholyte.
