In a more recent continuation of these studies, Campiani and co-workers carried out semi-empirical calculations on a series of active compounds related to 2. Docking into the human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) reverse transcriptase non-nucleotide binding site (RT NNBS) of a compound of type 3 (X = O) highlighted that one of the phenyl rings of this compound protrudes toward the catalytic site <2005JME7153>.

Some results of the application of these methods to the characterization of intermediate steps in several hydrolysis reactions, as well as a model for the path of such enzyme reactions, are given. This model is based on the identification of the basic groups on the catalytic sites and can be extended to explain the nature of transfer reactions. 

Identification of an inhibitor When slow inactivation proceeded in the presence of C02 and the Rubisco with bound inhibitor was isolated by gel filtration, no C02 was found attached to the enzyme. An obvious candidate is the enediol intermediate which might be suspected to be subject to misprotonation, giving rise to various pentulose-P2 isomers which could remain bound to the catalytic site (Fig. 8)... 

The major challenge of non-precious metal electrocatalysis of oxygen reduction reaction continues to be the lack of knowledge of the active catalytic sites and reaction mechanisms. The difficulties in the identification of the active sites are augmented by the virtual absence of effective NPMC characterization tools for direct probing of the surface of heat-treated catalysts. Further progress in the development of NPMCs will likely depend on the ability to characterize and understand the source(s) of the activity of the catalysts that have been already developed and are under development today.
