Many efforts have been made to base polymers on furfural made from pentoses.159 The polymers may be useful, but tend to have lower thermal stability than the usual synthetic polymers. Polyesters based on furfural were mentioned earlier. The acid-catalyzed polymerization of furfuryl alcohol is used in foundry cores.160 Furfural has been condensed with cardanol (m-pentadecadienylphenol) from cashew nut shell oil in the presence of other phenols to produce polymeric resins.161 Cardanol and hydrogenated cardanol have been polymerized with horseradish peroxidase to soluble polymers in up to 85% yield.162 Plasticizers that are effective in polyvinyl chloride, such as (12.31), have been made from furfural.163... [Pg.376]

Anacardic acids are 6-alkylsalicylic acids with different alkyl chain lengths and degrees of unsaturation. Cashew is the most important natural source of anacardic acids. Anacardic acids are found not only in cashew nut shell oil, but also in the nut and fruit juice made from cashew apple [20]. Anacardic acids are relatively nonpolar hydrophobic substances. Their structures are illustrated in Figure 10.1. They are insoluble in water, but well soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol or dimethyl sulfoxide (up to lOmg/mL). The cardanols might be formed by thermal decarboxylation of the anacardic acids [19]. [Pg.161]

Cashew nut shell oil for hyposensitization against Rhus dermatitis. Arch. Derm. (Chic.) 78, 359—363 (1958). [Pg.86]

Epi-derm has received four reports of allergic contact dermatitis from phenol-formaldehyde resins and brake pad mixes (N. Cherry, personal communication). The medical literature has very few reports of dermatitis in the brake-lining industry. Phenol-formaldehyde resin is the main potential allergen in the occupational environment. Cashew-nut shell oil is well recognised as an allergen, but the materials used in brake linings rarely appear to sensitise. (Adams 1990). The species Anacardium occidentale produces cashew nuts. It is in the same family as poison ivy, oak and sumac found in North America and elsewhere. Cross-... [Pg.847]
