From the viewpoint of accommodation to the filter-supporting structure, some cloths cannot be used, even though the filtering characteristics are excellent. For rotary drum filters, for example, the cloth is pressed onto the drum by the caulking method, which uses cords that pass over the drum. In this case, the closely woven cloths manufactured from monofilament polyethylene or polypropylene fiber are less desirable than more flexible cloths of polyfilament fibers or staple cloths. [Pg.151]

Openings around water pipe entries and sewer exits that pass through concrete can be easily sealed using caulks. Many builders use plastic sleeves to protect metal pipes from corrosion when they pass through concrete. Yan et al. [52] explored the use of IPN techniques to produce a composite vinyl-acrylic latex. The first-formed polymer was produced using VAc and divinyl benzene (DVB), while the second formed polymer constituted a BA/DVB copolymer. In both cases the DVB was added at 0.4 wt%. They compared this product with another product, a bidirectional interpenetrating netwodc (BIPN) in which VAc was again polymerized over the first IPN. They noted that the compatibility between the phases was more pronounced in the BIPN than in the IPN as determined using dynamic mechanical measurements and C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The concept of polymer miscibility has also been used to produce composite latex particles and thus modify the pafamance properties of VAc latexes. Bott et al. [53] describe a process whereby they bloid VAc/ethylene (VAc/E) copolymers with copolymers of acrylic acid or maleic anhydride and determine windows of miscibility. Apparently an ethyl acrylate or BA copolymer with 10-25 wt% AA is compatible with a VAc/E copolymer of 5-30 wt% ethylene. The information obtained from this woik was then used to form blends of latex polymers by polymerizing suitable mixtures of monomers into preformed VAc/E copolymers. The products are said to be useful for coating adhesives and caulks. [Pg.705]

Both models can be solved by different numerical schemes. The boundary element method has the advantage that the velocity gradient can be obtained more accurately than the finite-element method, which is important for predicting the fiber orientation (Barone and Caulk, 1986 Osswald and Thcker, 1988). When pressure is applied on a pressure-sensitive adhesive, the material will flow between the backing and the substrate. This is an example of so-called squeeze flow . Likewise, if we have two plates that are placed at an angle to each other, with adhesive in between them at the joint, and proceed to press the plates together, then we have an example of wedge flow . Another cause of paint peeling is excess moisture in the space behind a painted surface. The moisture condenses into water, enters the unpainted portion of a surface, then pushes the paint off the surface. If the excess moisture comes from inside a building, it is usually caused by insufficient ventilation to the outside and a paint system that is not waterproof. The solution in this case is to provide more ventilation to the outside and if necessary to apply a waterproof paint system. If the excess moisture comes from the outside, it is usually caused by insufficient ventilation of the space between the inside and outside surfaces. The solution in this case is to increase ventilation by adding ports to an exterior surface. Excessive caulking and sealing can turn a house into a blister box, resulting in excessive peeling when there are insufficient ventilation ports. [Pg.46]

A third common cause of peeling paint is moisture or water from the moist ground under a house or structure. For this reason, the bare ground in the crawl space under the structure is often covered with tar paper.
