This is a quite remarkable result, as the chemoselective hydrogenation of geraniol over a heterogeneous catalyst has rarely been reported. It can be carried out over platinum containing zeolite (9), over Pt/Al203 modified with carboxylic acids (10), over Ni/diatomaceous earth and alkali hydroxides or carbonates (11) or NiRaney and alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxides (12), yields never exceeding 85%. [Pg.383]

The Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, which may be broadly defined as the reductive polymerization of carbon monoxide, can be schematically represented as shown in Eq. (1). The CHO products in Eq. (1) are any organic molecules containing carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen which are stable under the reaction conditions employed in the synthesis. With most heterogeneous catalysts the primary products of the reaction are straight-chain alkanes, while the secondary products include branched-chain hydrocarbons, alkenes, alcohols, aldehydes, and carboxylic acids. The distribution of the various products depends on both the type of catalyst and the reaction conditions employed (4). [Pg.62]

The transformation of alcohols to the corresponding carbonyl compounds or carboxylic acids is one of the few examples in which a heterogeneous (solid) catalyst is used in a selective, liquid phase oxidation (7,2). The process, which is usually carried out in an aqueous slurry, with supported platinum or palladium catalysts and with dioxygen as oxidant, has limited industrial application due to deactivation problems. [Pg.308]

Catalysis by Solid Acids. Two aspects are considered here. The first aspect is concerned with transesterification reactions catalyzed by solid acids. Unfortunately, little research dealing with this subject has been reported in the literature. The second aspect deals with esterification reactions of carboxylic acids (or FFAs). This second part addresses an important characteristic of inexpensive TG feedstocks, i.e., high FFA content. Ideally, an active solid catalyst should be able to carry out transesterification and esterification simultaneously, thus eliminating pretreatment steps. It is likely that heterogeneous catalysts that perform well in esterification should also be good candidates for transesterification since the mechanisms for both reactions are quite similar. [Pg.82]

Heterogeneous palladium catalysts proved to be active in the conversion of simple alkenes to the corresponding allylic acetates, carbonyl compounds, and carboxylic acids.694 704 Allyl acetate or acrylic acid from propylene was selectively produced on a palladium on charcoal catalyst depending on catalyst pretreatment and reaction conditions.694 Allylic oxidation with singlet oxygen to yield allylic hydroperoxides is discussed in Section 9.2.2. [Pg.487]

It is well known that homogeneous compounds of Mo(VI) with carboxylic acids are powerful catalysts for the epoxidation of olefins. In order to heterogenize the Mo(VI) derivatives, a commercial carboxylated resins has been used by Ivanov et al. (ref. 1). A weak point of using a commercial resin is that it is not possible to control the number and distribution of carboxylic groups. This results in a poor flexibility of structure and properties of the final catalyst. [Pg.431]

Our pioneering work in 1986[1] has shown that acid zeolites are efficient catalysts in the Friedel-Crafts acylation of toluene and xylene with carboxylic acids and constitutes a breakthrough in environmentally friendly fine chemistry replacing the conventional AICI3 method by a heterogeneous catalysts. Since this initial study, a tremendous amount of work has been performed in this area[2] and particularly, in recent years, the acetylation reaction, which is a field of research with large potential for the production of fine chemicals, has been intensively investigated. [Pg.95]
