Carbon nanotubes SWNTs

Formation of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) was found to be catalyzed by metal nanoparticles [207]. Wang et al. [114] investigated bimetallic catalysts such as FeRu and FePt in the size range of 0.5-3 nm for the efficient growth of SWNTs on flat surfaces. When compared with single-component catalysts such as Fe, Ru, and Pt of similar size, bimetallic catalysts Fe/Ru and Fe/Pt produced at least 200% more SWNTs [114]. [Pg.68]

Only a few in vivo dermal toxicity studies have been reported so far. Huczko and Lange [50] evaluated the potential of raw CNTs to induce skin irritation by conducting two routine dermatological tests (patch test on 40 volunteers with allergy susceptibilities and Draize rabbit eye test on four albino rabbits). Koyama etal. [51] showed the biological responses to four different types of carbon nanotubes (SWNTs, two types of MWNTs with different diameters, and cup-stacked carbon nanotubes) after their subcutaneous implantation in mice. Both tests [50, 51] showed no or poor irritation effects. However, the in vitro studies in epidermal cell lines exposed to CNTs, and also a more recent report on the toxic outcomes of topical exposure of mice to SWNTs [46], have raised concerns over these assessments. Clearly, this is an area requiring further scientific evaluation. [Pg.182]

New applications of nitrile oxide 1,3-DC have been reported. Soluble, single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) 32 functionalized with pentyl esters at the tips and pyridyl isoxazoline rings along the walls were prepared using pentyl ester-SWNT as dipolarophile. The complex... [Pg.291]

Transient transmittance of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in suspension was modulated at two periods of T40 and 21 fs, corresponding to the RBM and G mode, respectively [54,55]. The amplitude and the frequency of the coherent RBMs exhibited a clear excitation-wavelength dependence (Fig. 2.15) [54]. The different frequencies were attributed to SWNTs with different diameters coming to the excitonic resonance. The FT spectra of the coherent RBMs in Fig. 2.15 had noticeable differences from the resonant Raman spectra, such as the different intensities and better frequency resolution. [Pg.37]

As a third group of fullerene-like systems whose synthetic development is identified as a major future challenge are structurally defined single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with uniform helicity and length, including their covalent and non-covalent derivatives. SWNTs can be considered as elongated giant fullerenes. [Pg.407]

In section 11D, we showed the sensitivity of TERS to distinguish different molecules by focusing on characteristic vibration modes of each molecule. In this section, we show another capability of TERS to characterize the structural difference of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) as a sample. [Pg.249]
