At the next level of abstraction are measurements performed at a thin film of fuel cell catalyst immobilized on the surface of an inert substrate, such as glassy carbon (GC) or gold (Fig. 15.2c). Essentially, three versions of this approach have been described in the fiterature. Tests were carried out at 25°C and at initial pH 6.9. Cultures in the liquid medium were incubated in 50 mL Falcon tubes, continuously shaked at 220 rpm. Each culture contained a fresh Pseudomonas sp. 0X1 colony in 10 mL of medium. The airlift with 10 g of pumice was sterilized at 121°C for 30 min and then housed in a sterile room. One-day culture was transferred to the reactor and, after a batch phase, liquid medium with phenol as the only carbon source was continuously fed. The reactor volume V was fixed at 0.13 L. Aerobic conditions were established sparging technical air. Under these conditions microorganism started to grow immobilized on the solid s support. When immobilized biomass approached steady state, cyclic operation of the airlift was started by alternating aerobic/anaerobic conditions. [Pg.121]

Injection of compressed CO2 into the deep ocean has already been tested. The goal of this approach is to emplace the CO2 into waters with low temperatures, ensuring the formation of relatively immobile gas hydrates. This strategy has the potential to sequester thousands of gigatonnes of carbon, but likely environmental impacts include (1) a change in the pH in the seawater near the emplaced gas hydrates, (2) benthic kills, (3) other ecosystem impacts, and (4) release back to the atmosphere as an eventual consequence of meridional overturning circulation. [Pg.756]

Electroanalytical sensors based on amperometric measurements at chemically modified electrodes are in the early stages of development. The modes of modification can take many forms, but the most common approach at the present time is the immobilization of ions and molecules in polymer films which are applied to bare metal, semiconductor, and carbon electrodes. Seston Sulfur. Much of the sulfur that is immobilized by assimilatoiy uptake or dissimilatory reduction is oxidized and reenters the water column as sulfate.
