Carbohydrate transformations

Rauter and her coauthors Xavier, Lucas, and Santos (Lisbon) present here a detailed overview of the potential for heterogeneous catalysts in useful synthetic transformations of carbohydrates. Such silicon-based catalysts as zeolites are easy to handle and recover, are nontoxic, and can offer interesting possibilities for exercising stereo- and regio-control in many established carbohydrate transformations.

In some chemical processes, including natural humus formation, non-enzymic carbohydrate transformation, in aqueous media, into noncarbohydrate products is important. 

The effect of color production from carbohydrate transformation in an alkaline pulping process, such as kraft pulping, is illustrated in Table III. Cotton linters, which originally had a brightness of 90.5%, were treated for 4 h at 180° with kraft liquor, with and without additives. Brightness was measured on paper made from the resulting, washed pulp.

Products of their modifications are widely utilized in food technology and everyday food preparations. Food processing such as cooking, baking, frying, and pickling usually deal with food carbohydrate transformations. 

One important application is in the field of carbohydrate transformations, the catalytic oxidation of D-glucose to D-gluconic acid represents an economically competitive route with respect to biochemical oxidation [4], This new process is the result of extensive studies on the selective Cl-hydroxyl group oxidation in the presence of O2 using a Pt or Pd catalyst modified with cocatalysts [5].
