Caprolactone polyols

The materials employed in these formulations consisted of bitolylene diisocyanate (3,3 -dimethyl-4,4 -biphenylene diisocyanate, 136T Upjohn Co.) referred to as T0DI, a polyether diol (tetramethyleneoxide polyol, Polymeg 2000, Quaker Oats Co.), a polyester diol (caprolactone polyol, PCP-200, Union Carbide Corp.) and a chain extender, 1,4-butanedio1 (Aldrich Chemical Co.). Cycloaliphatic epoxies serve as cross-linking agents for polyols for films baked at 120°C. Waterborne coatings are made with caprolactone polyols and (2), with diethylammonium trifiate as a blocked catalyst (152). 

Materials. Caprolactone polyols (Tone 0201 Mn= 530, and Tone 0305 Mn= 540), cycloaliphatic diepoxide (UVR-6105), triarylsulfonium hexafluoroantimonates (UVI-6974) were provided by Union Carbide Corporation. Surfactant L-7604 was procured from Witco Corporation. Caprolactone polyols were dried and stored with molecular sieves (4A). Tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS, 98 %) and xylene (99 %) were purchased from Aldrich. Xylene was purified according to reported literature [3]. Aluminum panels were purchased from Q-Panel Lab Products. All the materials were used as received unless specified otherwise. 

For adhesive applications, polyesters produced from polyalkylene phthalate or adipates are preferred because they produce high strength and modulus. These properties are not required for sealants. Speciality polyesters such as caprolactone polyols are used to enhance performances in a wide range of applications. 

Dendritic polyester polyols, which provide better rheological behaviour and thus enable better printing quality and superior curing speed of inks compared to other polyols such as caprolactone polyols.
