It seems that the earliest research in coordination chemistry performed in Australia was by Masson and Steele at Ihe University of Melbourne in 1896. Sir David Orme Masson was Rofessor of Chemistry in Melbourne (1886-1924). Bertram Steele later worked with Sir William Ramsay at University College, London and became Foundation Professor of Chemistry at the University of Queensland, Brisbane. Their paper, "The blue salt of Fehling s solution and other cuprotartrates" ), reported that the deep blue color of Fehling s solution was due to an anionic copper species. This work was not extended further until 1920 when Masson put his research students Packer and Wark to work on cuprotartrates they confirmed Masson and Steele s results and isolated several cuprotartrates ). Ian William (later Sir Ian) Wark extended Uiis work further in his RiD studies at University College, Londtmf ). John Packer subsequently became Professor of Chemistry at Canterbury University College, Christchurch, New Zealand in 1944. [Pg.127]

Frederick G rge Donnan (Colombo, Ceylon, 6 September 1870-Canterbury, 16 December 1956), a pupil of Ostwald and van t Hoff, was professor of physical chemistry in Liverpool (1910-13) and succeeded Ramsay as professor of chemistry in University College, London (1913-37). He gave the theory of the Hall and Thomson effects for solutions of an electrolyte, the second for two solutions in contact at different temperatures. He devised a drop pipette for investigating the dispersion of oils in alkali and soap solutions. Spring proved that the detergent action of soap in removing particles of dirt depends on peptisation by adsorption of soap at the interface. The use of salts of long-chain fatty acids as detei ents stems from researches by Reychler. ... [Pg.891]
