The biological activity of different Se species for tumor prevention has been studied by Ip et al. in several experimental models [36D38]. On the basis of their results, the highest activity was found for methylselenocysteine followed by selenite, selenocystine, and dimethylselenoxide [36]. In a more recent study that included different alk(en)ylselenocysteines and their y-glutamvl derivatives, high cancer preventive activity was also observed for methylselenocysteine [39]. In addition to inorganic forms and possible Se metabolites, the activity of the synthetic compound [l,4-phenylenebis(methylene)selenocyanate] has been tested [40, 41],... [Pg.673]

Spices have been also considered to be nutraceuticals. Curry powder, a commercial spice blend from India used nowadays worldwide, includes mr-meric, obtained from Curcuma longa. Beneficial effects of turmeric, known in Europe as Indian saffron since medieval times, have been associated to one of its components, curcumin with antihypertensive, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and cancer preventive activities [33-35]. [Pg.272]

Resveratol is an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiplatelet and antiallergy agent with demonstrated cancer-preventative activity (Cheong et al. 1999 Steele et al. 1998). It has been shown to inhibit cycloxygenase-2 (COX-2) in vitro (Subbaramaiah et al. 1998). [Pg.24]

Carotenoids are believed to play a significant role in protecting skin from oxidative damage. In vivo measurements in humans of lycopene, fi-, C, 7-, and a-carotenes, lutein and zeaxanthin, phytoene, and phytofluene have shown that carotenoid concentrations are correlated with the presence or absence of skin cancer and precancerous lesions. Carotenoids are also believed to protect against several other types of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and cataract formation and aid in immune function and gap-junction communication between cells, which is believed to be a protective mechanism related to their cancer-preventative activities. [Pg.100]
