Calibration, survey meters

All necessary accessories for PET studies, including a dose calibrator, 18F-FDG storage, a wipe test counter, a survey meter, and so on, are kept in the van. The mobile PET van moves daily to different clients sites according to the schedule made prior to the day of examination. The M.I.P. 10 is a portable, battery- or malns-operated survey meter, equipped with various types of nuclear radiation detectors. It can be used as a dose-rate monitor, if calibrated. 

Such check-up tests could not substitute the periodical calibration of the survey meter by the National Metrological Institute. The expected accuracy of such check-ups is better than +/- 20%. 

To test the validity of the indication, the survey meter should be connected to a variable power supply and the voltage should be reduced until the measured intensity drops by 10%. Then the supply voltage should be Increased with one volt and the series resistor of the moving coil meter should be adjusted to the border of the green and red areas. This test should be done once yearly BEFORE the calibration in the National Metrological Institute. 

We are currently checking orifices prior to each survey with the direct reading rotameter, and washing them in isopropyl alcohol afterwards. Every six months, the calibration checks are performed with the wet test meter. As long as field checks and rotameter calibration checks agree with the bi-annual wet test meter calibration results, we feel the orifices are performing accurately.
